December 7

Sometimes, you just need a fabulous day with your fabulous cousin.

Ryan, my BFC, came out to Boston College today, so we could spend some quality time together. As per usual when she comes, I needed a little help to get things organized. As per usual when she comes, she was more than understanding. She made me even more excited about Christmas, especially since she will be spending it in New Jersey with me!

We ventured to Newbury Street in the early afternoon, stopping immediately for peppermint mochas at Starbucks. I am a total sucker for those red cups, as I am sure you have noticed from my Instagram. Ryan was my first real photographer, so whenever she comes, we always try to shoot some quick photos for STYLESILIKE. She took some gems…stay tuned!

Desperate to escape the cold, we decided to skip shopping & headed straight to Sonsie for a quick glass of champagne. I don’t know how many times I have passed by this little bistro during my shopping excursions, but I have always wanted to stop in. Today, I discovered why this place is always packed with people. Sonsie truly decked their halls for Christmas. The decor is charming, the service is attentive, & the menu is packed with uniquely delicious items.

It felt so good just to sit & talk with Ryan for a while, sharing the details (big & small) of each other’s lives. I am forever appreciative that we just “get” each other. Corona and Marguerite arrived just in time for dinner. Ryan & I split the spinach goat cheese pizza, in addition to the pommes frites. It wouldn’t be a meal with her if we didn’t get an order of fries to share! I am kind of dreading our end-of-semester finals, but this dinner with three people I care about very much made all the stress seem minimal in comparison to my present joy.

I regretted my (foolish but classic) decision not to wear tights/a real winter coat, as we walked over to Boston Symphony Hall. However, much like the restaurant we were at, this Boston landmark was toasty warm & decorated to the nines for their holiday performances. Although they perform on campus each year during Parent’s Weekend, I have never seen the Boston Pops live. Ryan & I grabbed two more glasses of champagne & headed excitedly to our seats.

The concert was spectacular. The line-up included some traditional classics, a spirited sing-along, and several beautiful pieces I had never even heard before. The energy from both the symphony & the accompanying choir was contagious. Since we were little, our grandparents & parents have instilled in our family an appreciation for the performing arts. This show was more special simply because Ryan & I got to enjoy it together. If you are local, I highly recommend going to see the Boston Pops during this holiday season.

I know this post is longer than usual. While I wrote this & several other STYLESILIKE items for the coming week, Ryan has cuddled next to me the whole time watching our favorite musical version of “A Christmas Carol”. We’ve been singing the lyrics & making jokes for about two hours now. This girl is just good for my soul, and to quote one of our favorite songs, there’s a “place in my heart where you’re always home with me” – no matter what. I love you so much, Ry.

Thank you for today.
