Be Styled. Be Happy. Be Pretty.

Although I had heard about the magic of blow dry bars, I had never visited one before. My first trip to BeStyled was just last week. I reached out to their public relations team to see if I could experience a visit myself in preparation for a day of back-to-back interviews for a summer internship. It is in these important moments that I especially want to look my best.

For those who know me, my hair has a mind of its own. Kinks and curls are a daily blessing/battle. Therefore, when I am attempting to look my most polished and poised, I feel more confident putting my raw material in the hands of professionals.

You can see why I was happy I did.

In a completely typical fashion, my appointment was at 7:00 AM, and the fire alarm at my school went off at 6:15 AM. I was, as a result, running several minutes late to my appointment. When I called to alert the recipionist, she was kind and understanding, immediately bumping my appointment back 15 minutes. Sometimes, you can just walk into a store or a restaurant or a museum, and the layout and lighting combination alone can make you feel welcome. This was how I felt walking into the BeStyled Blow Dry Lounge.

I was greeted by the recipionist, who kindly offered to take my bag and fetch me a refreshment. I walked towards my seat, which was one of about a dozen chairs all in a row, facing a marble countertop. The chairs all were in perfect view of the two flat screen TVs. I knew my day at BeStyled was destined to be fab when I saw they were playing “Clueless”, my family’s ultimate  90s film.

My stylist brought me over to wash and shampoo my hair – always one of my favorite aspects of a day at the salon. She towel dried my hair and led me to my chair.

Waiting for me was the cappuccino I had ordered, in addition to a hand mirror and personal iPad for browsing the BeStyled App.

I explained to my stylist that I would be heading into New York City for interviews tomorrow, and I asked for her recommended hairstyle. She said that BeSwirly would be too much, BeSleek would not be enough, and BeSoft was just right. This hairstyle, she rationalized, was simple enough not to overpower my look but special enough to prove I had put in the effort. She was the blow drying expert, so I took her advice.

I listened to Cher, Dionne, and Tai discuss their extensive wardrobes and quote worthy daily happenings in Beverly Hills, CA, while my stylist worked section by section to make my hair sleek.

Considering I was coming in at just after sunrise, I anticipated being the only client getting styled. However, there were at least half a dozen other women in the salon from the time I arrived to the time I left. One of BeStyled’s greatest advantages are its hours, which allow guests greater flexibility when making their appointments.

My hair was ready after merely 35 minutes in my chair. Although I usually appreciate timeliness in my beauty appointments, the ambience at BeStyled was so relaxing I almost wish it had gone on longer. When she turned me around, I could see my style was exactly the Goldilock’s middle of the road look she had promised – not too much but just enough.

At the conclusion of my appointment and standing underneath these words, this quote by Audrey Hepburn came back to me. Because I went to BeStyled and was able to interact with their kind and attentive staff, I left feeling like a million bucks.  You could be anybody, but if you feel like a million bucks, you are going to act like a million bucks.

The moral of the story, therefore, is this.

Every day or as many days as you can…

It is my personal belief you can only look your prettiest when you feel your happiest.
